What is Reiki* and where does it come from?

Reiki is a Japanese technique used for stress reduction and relaxation. It is administered by “laying on hands” and is based on the idea that an unseen “life force energy” flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words – Rei which means “God’s Wisdom or the Higher Power” and Ki which is “life force energy”. So Reiki is actually “spiritually guided life force energy.”

Reiki treats the whole person including body, emotions, mind and spirit creating many beneficial effects that include relaxation and feelings of peace, security and well-being. Reiki is a simple, natural and safe method of spiritual healing and self-improvement that everyone can use.

Although it is spiritual in nature, Reiki is not a religion. Practitioners are not asked to change their religious or spiritual beliefs in order to perform Reiki and do not impose those beliefs onto clients.

What should I expect during a Reiki session?

In a standard treatment, Reiki flows from the practitioner’s hand. Sessions are generally performed on a massage table with the client laying down fully clothed. The practitioner will place his or her hands on or near the client in various positions depending on the client’s needs.

What one experiences during a session varies from person to person, although most usually feel a deep sense of relaxation. Reiki encourages the client to let go of tension, anxiety, or any other negative feelings to help heal and bring peace to his or her well-being. At the end of a session, clients typically feel more balanced and have a more positive outlook.

Who can receive Reiki?

Everyone can receive Reiki: babies, children, adults, pregnant women, those with illnesses, animals, and even plants.

What are the benefits of Reiki?

Reiki has a positive affect on everything. It can help with minor conditions such as stress, sore throats, bee stings, and headaches as well as more serious conditions like cancer. It can also help reduce side effects from medical treatments and improve healing rates.
